I am trying not to be jealous of your opportunity to learn at an Ambleside School. We have one about an hour and a bit away in Fredricksburg, TX but I can't see a time in the near future that I could afford the time or the cost. So I am so happy you are sharing. The hardest thing is really the preparation, I think! To read ahead, and know exactly what you will be reading each day so that you can give the little talk.. I've been trying to read When Children Love to learn as I never finished it the last time I was reading it, and MaryEllen St. Cyr is a contributor. I , too, have a baby/toddler and preschoolers like Amber, and it is challenging. I'd love to hear your ideas for adjusting to accommodate a younger family. I've thought of keeping my 6 year old and 8 year old together for more subjects but they are on such different read and discussion levels in so many areas! Anyway, thank you for the visuals and discussion!Amandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05576250498849625401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470474628831131953.post-57115620588523115702012-09-10T16:55:25.882-04:002012-09-10T16:55:25.882-04:00Yes, I think I noted before that I don't think...Yes, I think I noted before that I don't think I could have done this with little ones around. However, I am thinking about how it might be adjusted to accommodate a family with little ones. I hope to post my musings...
Hang in there! I know how crazy it can be with babies/toddlers...I did it for 20+ years!!! And most of it was definitely done "on the fly"! I so admire you for being able to do all you do!Carolinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15304563767667167446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470474628831131953.post-76183239962749682412012-09-10T00:43:13.537-04:002012-09-10T00:43:13.537-04:00Now this is the part that makes me envy classroom ...Now this is the part that makes me envy classroom teachers... I would love to be able to do this, but I struggle with being able to prepare to that level consistently. It is also so challenging to make that work with a little one underfoot! But I can see the benefit of it, and we do most of it... The main part I am missing is the little talk and set-up before the reading. It all tends to happen on the fly as needed - and I admit I don't read everything beforehand either. I generally have read it, but it might have been months ago and isn't exactly fresh in my mind.

I appreciate you sharing this, it certainly gives me something to think about and good ideas for my own improvement in the future!Amberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12689104216675201913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470474628831131953.post-35713839572675967972012-09-08T16:28:45.816-04:002012-09-08T16:28:45.816-04:00Thank you, Nancy, for your kind words. Our joy in learning is such an important model for our children, and it is the source of great richness and value in our own lives. How many adults really are able to delight in the life of the mind? I am sure that the kind of education we receive as children and the joy of our own teachers in the subjects they teach are the main contributors to whether or not we will become joyous life-long learners. Also, just want to say, I love your blog! It's smoothish, not grossgrain, but you could use whatever dark color and texture you wanted. I thought the tape would adhere more easily and firmly to smoother ribbon, which is why I didn't use grossgrain. If you attach your cards with the velcro, probably either kind of ribbon would work. Or you could even staple them. I attached the cards so the ribbon in the middle (see the picture in the Atmosphere post). It would be possible to merge any timeline with this one, just don't forget that the idea is to have "pegs" on the timeline, not so much everything you have ever studied. At the end of this year, I'll probably take down a few cards that were specific to our studies this year and leave up the main pegs--Birth of Christ, Pyramids, Fall of Rome, etc. Carolinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15304563767667167446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470474628831131953.post-68990011748632085452012-09-06T14:22:46.652-04:002012-09-06T14:22:46.652-04:00Yeah..there's that...Yeah..there's that...Carolinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15304563767667167446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470474628831131953.post-87921493637115830772012-09-05T23:32:19.560-04:002012-09-05T23:32:19.560-04:00Thanks for the detailed info, Caroline. Yesterday they fed the snake a baby toad, since it was refusing to eat the crickets. Not sure how many baby toads we have around here, so I'm wondering how it will all work out in the long run. For now, though, it's all pretty interesting. Remember, don't pick your lizard up by the tail, you know, or it will detach and you will have tailless lizard scurrying about on your floor! As I mentioned before, it is geared toward a classroom setting, but I did benefit from a real immersion in the philosophy of Charlotte Mason and also the many hours of experiencing narration techniques. One of our instructors, Janet, was from Texas and used to work at the Fredericksburg school. I haven't mentioned her in the posts yet, but I will! I had to giggle at your snake :D my boys bought a very small lizard over the summer and it sits right next to our nature study/seasonal area. They are constantly catching the ones in our backyard and making natural terrariums and then letting them go, but for some reason they needed one indoors too (one they could go over and see all day long!) Snakes were their other choice (we see a few of those as well) I guess I should be relieved they didn't pick the snake; cricket feeding sounded much better than mice :OJennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10928243120890335339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1470474628831131953.post-40681706797574052542012-09-01T00:48:16.088-04:002012-09-01T00:48:16.088-04:00Wonderful and inspiring! I knew it wasn't working, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what needed to change. Your list in your most recent post is going to be so useful!
